The Lotu Armchair was conceived as a quiet and enduring object shaped by both Basque and Japanese sensibilities. Rooted in the idea of connection, the chair explores balance, tension and structural harmony through a restrained and essential language. Its name, Lotu — the Basque word for “to bind” or “to connect” — reflects the central concept behind the piece.
The relationship between the legs and armrests creates a subtle sense of suspension, as if the different elements were held together in a delicate state of equilibrium. This gesture is further reinforced through an optional rope detail that physically and visually binds the structure while introducing a softer tactile layer — a place where the body naturally comes to rest.
For the seat, we worked from the familiar proportions of a classic lounge chair, seeking a silhouette that feels both recognisable and quietly contemporary. We are interested in objects that evoke a sense of familiarity through their presence and proportions, while introducing subtle shifts in form, construction and materiality. Rather than pursuing novelty for its own sake, Lotu approaches innovation through balance, restraint and longevity
